Week 4: Now that's gonna leave a (book)Mark!

Some of my Diigo Tags
Okay, I realize that it might be hard to compete with the Grammy buzz tonight, but I'll give it my best shot!  In class tonight, you can begin by working on your newsletters. . .there is also always a journal article or two that can be completed, as well as a cool gadget being added to your blog.  Discover any interesting teacher site or other educational resource?  Why not tweet it with our #ed422 hashtag. . .

Tonight, we will learn about social bookmarking and how to use it to collect/archive resources and to connect with other educators.  You will also use a reflection tool from the School 2.0 website to get a feel for the NETS-T and how they transfer to your teaching practice. Everyone should have purchased her/his ISTE subscription and TaskStream as well.  I will have you log in to Task Stream and self-enroll in the CSUSM Local TPE portfolio (it is the one you will be using for the credential program).

I also want to remind everyone that if you need help with anything related to this course, I am always in the lab at least an hour before class.  If that time doesn't work, we can also arrange another time/place for some extra help. . .please don't be afraid to ask.

This week's Question: If this course were Pass/Fail instead of being offered as a letter grade, would it change your effort?  Explain.

  1. yes, the emphasis on elite grades (A or B) would not longer exist. If I only needed a 70% to complete the class and not held accountable for the other 30%; then, why would I do above and beyond. This can be shown in Baseball when teams mathematically make the playoffs. Incentive on getting elite grades (ex: Dean's list) give motivation to students.

  2. I agree with Robert. However, in this course, I do not see how it would be possible to not give 100% effort. 70% wouldn't cut it. If the effort wasn't there, the final product (in technology) wouldn't exist.

  3. I don't think it would affect my effort. I would probably be more willing to skip class(es), but when I would be in class, I think I would put the same amount of effort into it that I would into a letter-grade class. Work wise, I would put all my effort into the assignments I did complete. But knowing that I wasn't working towards an A, I would probably skip the little assignments.

  4. Nope. Not at all. I have taken pass/fail classes before, and I work just as hard in those classes as I do in graded classes. I am overly stressed about my grades and doing well in classes, so I would do the same amount of work regardless.

  5. Yes, if this class was offered as Pass/Fail then I would pick and choose what projects I would spend more time on (based off of what projects I liked more). If I did not care for a project then I would be more likely to not complete it or only do it half way because it would not effect my graded as much.

  6. Good question. Probably. I have a tendency to shoot for an A and if I fall short I'm usually content with a B. If this class were pass/fail I'd probably do a little above the bare minimum.

  7. I don't think it would change my effort because I always want to try my best in order to get the best grade I can. I would still do all the assignments and come to class like I do now.

  8. No. I think I would put in the same amount of effort because I actually enjoy this class, and that is usually the determining factor of how hard I work. My grade is just a bi-product.

  10. If this course were a pass or fail, I would work just as arduously. I would continue to do quality work and seek growth. I have taken pass/fail courses in the past and I find myself devoting the same time and energy on them as a traditional grading course.

  11. No, it wouldn't have an effect on how I approached the class. I have a very strong work ethic and hold myself to pretty high standards when it comes to school work--well, everything really. Plus, if the topic is interesting I'll pay attention no matter what.

  12. If this class was pass/fail most definitely I would not work as hard. I would work just on passing the class and not so much for receiving an A. I would feel like it is a waste of time putting so much effort into a class when everyone who passes gets the same passing grade.

  13. If this course was pass or fail, I still would put effort into my assignments. It would be more beneficial for me to learn and understand all the different things we are doing with computer programs and online networking.

  14. If it was a pass fail I would put minimal effort, but since I like what I am doing I'm sure I would not lag on items due and still shoot to pass the class of course!

  15. I would put in the same amount of effort if this class was pass/fail. I just can't do the minimum and slide by, it has never been in my nature to do so. No matter what, I would try my best either way.

  16. If this class were a pass/fail, I do not think I would enroll in the first place. If this were the only option, I would not work as hard. I need to have incentive, no matter how simple the drive- in this case, an A. I would not want to get lazy but the temptation to not try hard would exist.

  17. I feel like this class is already pass/fail. Don't be insulted, I think that everyone is experiencing with technology in their own way for example everyone has a different looking blogs. I don't think that people are just trying to pass. I know that I have already learned so much just in 3 weeks and I am more familiar with the technological world. I am not afraid of macs anymore and I have a twitter when I swore to myself that I would NEVER EVER get one. Hope this makes sense =]

  18. I feel that it really wouldn't for the fact that in order to pass one must complete all that is required. If you don't complete it then yes you fail. Either way my effort in the class would be the same and I would make it a point to do 100% work so that I can prove that I should pass the class

  19. No, I feel like I would put in the same effort as if the class were for a letter grade. This is because I find this class interesting, and I care enough to learn something new about technology. And hey it doesn't hurt to learn how technology can help me as a future educator.

  21. Since I've never taken a pass/fail course, I think I would be so paranoid about failing that I would continue to put all the effort I have into the course. Also, I do agree with Gina, that you cannot NOT put all your effort into a course like this one. I think either you complete the assignments, or you do not. It is not like a Literature course where you can bs a paper. You either make a blog, post on twitter, and do the journals, or you don't.

  22. I Think pass or fail does not require as much effort as grade level course. I might be wrong since i have never taken a pass/fail class

  23. I would put the same amount of effort. A class is a class and if it goes on my transcript it is equally important with my other classes.

  24. I believe that I would put the same amount of effort into a pass/fail course. Though I have never taken a pass/fail course, and have little familiarity with the structure, it is my assumption that I would be actively engaged to ensure I pass.

  25. I believe that my personal goals to do the best I can at all times would maintain my level of commitment to the class regardless of the fact that it might be pass fail or for a grade. That fact does not influence my desire to succeed.

  26. I would put in the same effort for a pass/fail course as a letter grade course, if only to get the most that I can for my money's value. Unless I were in a dire situation that suddenly changed my schedule and skipping a few assignments became necessary in order to facilitate my needs, I don't believe I would put in any less effort.

  27. I would put in the same effort when I had the chance because I think the knowledge in this class would be super helpful. Also it it would take effort to make sure that I would pass the class and not let it fall through the cracks knowing that I had other assignment due for a letter grade.
