Week 12: Mind maps, Symbaloo, juggling assignments, and the Meaning of Life!

The cemetery at Manzanar (on the way to Mammoth)
I believe that week twelve symbolizes the fact you are now 75% complete with the semester.  Can I get a, "Whoop, whoop?"  Anyway, I'm sure that you are equal parts relived and stressed with the pressures that make up the end of a semester.  Those who do not love technology might have a bit more stress than most.  If you are feeling behind or in need of help, please come to class early to receive help. If you cannot make it early on Mondays, I am always willing to schedule a time to help anyone who needs it.  Like most of you, I am very busy, but this topic is such a passion for me that I don't even consider it work. . .Okay, grading papers is work, but everything else is just plain fun.

I have graded everything that is due up through tonight's class.  I have not completed a third pass at revised assignments, but will do so soon.  I graded the Excel, Presentation, and PLN assignments this weekend.  Many of you have some editing to do.  As I was out of town last week, I left you with plenty to do for the week.  My fear is that not much has been completed? Please tell me that isn't so. . .And I know you revised your NETS I collaborative narratives, right?

The two assignments that should be most pressing are the journals 6-10, to include PLN and Adaptive Technology (journals 7 and 8), and the Cybersafety Collaborative Website.  Take advantage of the beginning of class to meet with your group and ensure that each member knows what page she or he is assigned and perhaps even share best practices with the class??  You also have Symbaloo to learn and create a great webmix of your proficiency for TPE 14.

Tonight, I want to discuss the past assignments to ensure you understand all you need to do.  Everyone should be in my TaskStream container now, so we will log in and request feedback. We can revisit your Emerging Tech Checklist as well. Finally, I will introduce the Mind Map Assignment and how to use it to brainstorm and organize your artifacts that meet the NETS standards!

Next week we will be learning how to edit with iMovie.  I am giving a very early reminder to bring headphones for the assignments.  Any headphones that work with .mp3 players, iPods, laptops, etc., will work.  We will be editing with music, so headphones are necessary to avoid annoying your peers.

Another quick reminder that the weekly questions are part of the attendance and participation of the course. . .I should have had more than 17 responses for week ten.

This Week's Question: What is the last good book your read. . .it could have been for pleasure or something assigned to you for a class?

  1. I just happened to be working on an assignment hence the late night post...The last great book read was, Let the Great World Spin by Colin Mcaan. I stumbled on it at the library and couldn't put it down. Someday, after I get my 422 work completed, I will read again:).

  2. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is the last good book I read. Found out about it when I first saw a promotional post for the film and had to find it. Its written like a bibliography and has vampires and Abe in it. What more could you want.

  3. Marvel Masterworks: X-Men vol 1, it is chronological collection of the x-men comics. It is an interesting read because I have always been an X-men and comic book fan, and now I can get my hands on the first few and read them in order. Picture, for years reading ch 7 in the 5th Harry Potter then ch 6 in the 4th. Now i can actually read the story from the start.

    1. Robert, look up the "Essential X-Men" volumes. Black and White, Encyclopedia-sized collections of Uncanny X-Men, Wolverine and other titles. I have several volumes myself.

  4. Harry Potter!!! This summer I am going to Harry Potter world so I started to re-read the books. Guess you can call me a Harry Potter nerd!

  5. I can answer this on two levels: For pleasure, I have been reading the novels based on the Halo video game and am current;y reading what takes place at the end of the war featured in the game. It has been exciting to read about the culmination of a franchise that began in 2001. A lot fo politics are going on and it's actually light on action compared to the other novels, so i feel that it is finally maturing intellectually.
For schoolwork, I have recently read "Part of My Soul Went With Him" by Winnie Mandela, wife of President Nelson Mandela. It was a very interesting book and showed me that South Africa is a very different country from as recently as twenty years ago. For all the people who don't think that different "races" can live together, they need to read this and "Armed and Dangerous" by Ronnie Kasrils. IThese two books gave me the best examples possible of privileged Whites working with oppressed Blacks for equality that I can think of.

  6. Two days ago I completed reading Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs and thought it was a great book. Although I was forced to read it by my history professor for a class seminar, I ended up loving the book. Just as the tittle implies the book is about the life of a slave girl and her struggle for freedom. It was a sad book and it made me realize how fortunate I am to be free. I would encourage anyone, young and old, to read this great piece of literature!

  7. The last GOOD book that I have read... hmm.. wow. Seeing as when I am in school I dont have time to read "for fun," and usually don't fully enjoy what I am reading for school (bad I know..) the last really good book I have read would have to be Hunger Games. I read them almost a year ago, but because of school and work, I haven't had much time to sit down and enjoy reading. Also good: The Dexter Series that the show is based off of. :) I look forward to this summer because I have set a goal to read the Game of Thrones series. It will happen.

  8. The last book that i actually read and was good was PS i love you. I read this book even before they began to make a movie out of it. I really enjoyed it because it was a love story about a dead husband that was trying to get his wife to move on and do something with her life rather than rot in her home. its a sweet store that brought together a family in ways they never thought would happen. I really wish i had more time to read other books but unfortunately I don't but that is the last good book that i have read.

  9. I am not much of a reader, I am easily distracted when I read. Also, school doesn't make reading anymore fun. However, recently in my anthropology class I have been reading a book about various medical models. I have found it very interesting to learn about medicine in different cultures. It has really opened my mind to different healing practices other than the western medical model.

  10. The last set of books I was interested in was Harry Potter, very popular reading but it sucks me in! I don't leisure read cause I have way too much to do for school. But I think Harry Potter is great:)

  11. A book about the history of airplanes I read at my work, I don't know the name

  12. The last book that I enjoyed was Slaughterhouse Five. It had twists and turns and it had a unique feel to it. So it goes.

  13. The last book I read that I really enjoyed is called Predator. It was a book that my grandma read and let me read and it was actually a really good book. I love when I read a book and feel like I can't put it down because I want to know what is going to happen next....and that is how this book was. I really recommend it.

  14. The last good book I read was Crown Duel, at the beginning of last semester. I"m not sure if that really counts though because it was probably the fifth or sixth time I've read it. Recently, I listened to Emma by Jane Austen, and while I wasn't actually reading it, it was a great book that I enjoyed listening to. I love to read, however with school and work, I am often too tired to read and would rather zone out with a good TV show.

  15. The last good book I read was, "The Spirit Catches You, and You Fall Down" I read it for a class years ago. It was about this Hmong family and their ways of treating her illness vs western medicine. Great book to understand cultural differences.

  16. I read the Hunger Games trilogy over winter break. All three books, finishing the final book during the first week of the Spring semester. I enjoyed the books. But they got nothing on Harry Potter still :)

  17. The last great book I read was "The Help." Last year, during finals week, I stayed up till the wee hours of the morning to finish. It is byfar one of my top 3 reads.

  18. The last good book I read was The Catcher in the Rye. It is my absolute favorite book and I have read it at least 5 times. I had to read it for AR testing in high school and am so glad that I randomly picked it from the list that day.

  19. I usually don't read autobiographies (or many other books for that matter, sad to say I'm not much of a "reader"), but I recently read "My Story," written by Marilyn Monroe. She writes about her childhood, adolescent years, and her rise and struggles to fame. She is my very favorite actress/model/icon, so I really enjoyed reading about her life story from her perspective. I was surprised to learn about some of the things she went through, especially when she was a child.

  20. This list will come in handy when summer rolls around and I can begin leisure reading again [WOOHOO!] The last good book I read is called Room. I'm blanking on the author's name right now, but I highly recommend it to everyone. It has a lot to deal with language and growing up. The main character, a young boy, has never been outside of his room and is trapped in by and with his mother. It is an interesting concept, and it's a great experience growing and learning with the boy as be becomes more curious about the outside world.

  21. Last good read would be "Real Woman Have Curves", required for my history class. Great book taught me a bunch of Spanish.

  22. I read two phenomenal books one right after another (both for pleasure), and I cannot decide which is better. I read "Skinny Legs and All" by Tom Robbins which I loved, as well as "The Robber Bride" by Margaret Atwood. Both of them are brilliant writers and their books had me hooked. Page turner doesn't even begin to describe it.

I must say, though, David Sedaris is my all-time favorite author.

  23. Justice League The New 52's, issue 7

  24. I read quite often and the last one that I really loved was A Million Little Pieces. It was on Oprah's book list, until she found out he exaggerated some of his stories, and called him a liar on national television. Regardless it was still an amazing book!

  25. For another course I had to visit the Homeboy's Industries in L.A. Prior to the visit I had to read a book written by the founder of the project, "Tattoos on the Heart," by Father Greg Boyle. It was such a heartbreaking, yet enlightening story. The work that Father Greg does for the community is inspiring.

  26. One of the best books I have read in a while would be the Great Gatsby, but it was back in high school. I was such a great story and that reminds me I need to buy the book and make it my summer reading!

  27. The book that I am reading now is Bullfinch's Mythology--an old English textbook that I picked up at my local library's yearly book sale (only a dollar a bag!). I'm kind of a mythology and folk/fairy tale buff, so I have been thoroughly enjoying this! Right now I'm reading the part on Greek and Roman mythology, but there is also a section on Norse mythology as well.
